Famous British-American businessman John McAfee was found dead in prison in Barcelona, Spain, according to reports from Reuters and Catalan Justice Department publications. As suggested by the Spanish police, the cause of death is believed to be suicide.

He is widely known as the founder of the McAfee antivirus company that was purchase by Intel. The death was confirmed by McAfee’s lawyers, according to whom it was “the result of a cruel system that had no reason to keep this man in jail for so long.”

Why was John McAfee living in prison?

McAfee was arrested in October 2020. While serving his prison time, he was awaiting extraction from the U.S. The businessman was facing charges of tax evasion and securities fraud related to a cryptocurrency scheme.

He was 75 years old at the time of his death. The lawyers told Reuters that the incident happened after the Spanish court gave a green signal to McAfee’s extradition to American soil. If found guilty, he would have served a life-long prison sentence in the U.S.

McAfee said in a past court hearing that the U.S. was using him to set an example, and he hoped to seek justice in the Spanish court.

In the past, McAfee has his share of adventures including his love for guns. The list includes sharing pictures of himself on a boat claiming to be on a run from the CIA.
