Instagram plans to reintroduce a new chronological feed for its users after more than five years. According to statements by Adam Mosseri during a hearing before the Senate on Wednesday. Likewise, he said, the company is working on “a version” of its feed that would show posts in chronological order.
Instagram first introduced an alternative to chronological feed in 2016, which received a lot of criticism from the users. The current algorithm uses AI to sort posts automatically for each user, effectively creating a “personalized” feed.
Since its inception, the “personalized” feed has remained unpopular among most users. Instagram has made several under-the-hood changes to its feed algorithm over the years. However, despite all the efforts, a significant fraction of the users still wanted the chronological feed.
Mosseri said Instagram’s new chronological feed would eventually roll out sometime in 2022. He also said the company has been working on a new chronological feed feature “for months” and hopes to launch it in the first quarter of 2022.
Also, any specific details regarding the new chronological feed feature are unknown. Mosseri only mentioned that the part is the company is working on.
Even if the social media platform adds a chronological feed option, there would be a choice between different feed types. Essentially, users can choose between automatic feed sorting and chronological feed sorting. Would you use Instagram’s new chronological feed, or do you like the current feed?
