Short Bytes: Today is March 14, 2017. Each year March 14 is celebrated as Pi Day because the digits 3/14 make the first three digits of the irrational number Pi. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Its value is not just an approximation, but this value is incommensurable i.e. irrational.
Pi is being studied from past 3,000-4,000 years when Greek Mathematician Archimedes gave a correct approximation of Pi’s value. Indian mathematician Aryabhatta worked on it and came to the conclusion that Pi is irrational. On the other hand, the history of Pi Day dates back to 1988 when Larry Shaw, who worked at the San Francisco Exploratorium as a physicist, first observed the day.
