With Windows 10 20206 Preview build announced last week for the Dev Channel, Microsoft has made some significant improvements to the virtual keyboard on Windows 10.
While visual changes come in the form of new keypress animations and sounds, emoji searches, and labels in the Settings menu entries, Redmond has done some work to improve the virtual keyboard’s usability.
Insiders can now press and hold the space bar on the virtual keyboard to move the cursor anywhere while editing text. This is a handy feature for tablets as it quickly lets you reach the point where changes are required. Otherwise, tapping in the right place at the first attempt is a little tricky.
To recall, a similar feature exists on Apple’s iPad and iPhone; it was introduced in the iOS 12 update. After holding the space bar, you can move your finger left, right, up, or down, giving you the ability to jump between lines.
However, it remains to be seen what differences Microsoft has made in its implementation of the feature.
The ‘hold space to move cursor’ feature is available to limited Dev Channel users. Microsoft will roll it out to all Dev Channel users after it identifies issues affecting performance and reliability, the company said.
Improvements and new features to the Windows 10 virtual keyboard are always welcomed as we see more hybrid PCs with a touchscreen as an option. Microsoft’s Surface-branded tablets would also benefit from all the new keyboard features.
