According to the NPD Group, a marketing research company, Grand Theft Auto 5 takes the crown for being the best selling game of the decade in the US. However, what’s impressive is that 10 of the 20 games on the list were Call Of Duty titles:

- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Call of Duty: Black Ops III
- Call Of Duty: Ghosts
- Red Dead Redemption II
- Call of Duty: WWII
- Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII
- Minecraft
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019
- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Mario Kart 8
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- Battlefield 1
- Battlefield 4
- Destiny
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Star Wars Battlefront 2015
If you look at the top 10 games only on the list, you’d see that 7 of them were Call of Duty Games, with GTA5 at the top, Red Dead Redemption at seventh, and Minecraft taking the last spot.
So, it clearly states that Activision’s mammoth franchise, Call of Duty, dominates the gaming market.
The Unbeatable Success Of Grand Theft Auto 5
It’s not surprising that Rockstar’s 2013 title, GTA5, tops the best-selling games of the decade list. For Instance, in 2018, GTA5 made more money than any movie, book, or game.
Even today, after seven years since the game released, a large number of streamers on Twitch and YouTube have been streaming GTA5. And with exciting modes like playing as Tommy Vercetti from Vice City, GTA5 never gets old.
Even Creutz, managing director and senior research analyst covering the media and entertainment sector at Cowen, told Marketwatch in 2018 that Rockstar will surely have many hits in the future; still, nothing could match the success of GTA5.
“Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums, but he only had one Thriller,” said Creutz.
