Google Search Could Get A Major “Material Design” Overhaul

Google might be preparing a big visual change for its most popular product, Google Search. The company is testing a revamped version of Search which was spotted by a vigilant netizen who posted the screenshot on Reddit.

The new face of Google Search will be beautified using the Material Design design language built upon the card-based interface introduced with Google Now. In addition to Android, the material design has been slowly brought to other products including Search, YouTube, and Chrome.

Now, it seems Search is on its way to get some more Material Design treatment. The goal is to make the user interface as clean as possible and the search results will be presented like cards that individually stand out on the web page. These visual teaks appear to be line with what Google offers on Android and iOS; the search results on these platforms are already displayed as cards in Google Chrome.

It can’t be said exactly when (or ever) the new layout will be rolled out to the masses. But it might happen gradually over time, rather than all at once.

This is not the first time Google is testing a card-style interface for desktop search. The chances that Google would scrap them off altogether seems to be less likely as the design language has proved to be a successful and crucial element across its product lineup.
