GeckoLinux Revives Budgie Edition And Adds New Pantheon Desktop

A few months ago, openSUSE-based GeckoLinux released new versions of its three main editions — STATIC, ROLLING, and NEXT — after a gap of around two years.

The Static (based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed) edition combinedly offers a large variety of customized desktop environments such as KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQT, and IceWM.

Meanwhile, the NEXT edition comes with the latest KDE Plasma desktop and KDE package built on top of a stable openSUSE Leap base.

Extending the line-up of its already large desktop options, GeckoLinux has now announced the addition of the Pantheon desktop and the return of the Budgie Desktop to its lineup. Both desktops also feature in our list of best Linux desktop environments.

GeckoLinux with Pantheon desktop

Pantheon is the default desktop in elementary OS distribution that resembles its appearance to the macOS. For GeckoLinux, the Pantheon desktop is available in both NEXT and ROLLING editions.

The GeckoLinux NEXT Pantheon edition is built by combining the X11:Pantheon:Branch OBS repository with openSUSE Leap 15.2 fixed-release base and the Packman multimedia repository.

Similarly, the GeckoLinux ROLLING-OBS Pantheon edition also includes the same polished GeckoLinux set of configurations and pre-installed applications, together with Packman multimedia repository, and the Pantheon packages from the X11:Pantheon:Branch OBS repository, built on top of the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling base.

GeckoLinux with Budgie desktop

Budgie is the modern design and default desktop of the Solus Operating System, written from scratch. For GeckoLinux, it is also available in both ROLLING and NEXT editions.

The GeckoLinux NEXT Budgie edition combines the X11:Solus OBS repository together with the openSUSE Leap 15.2 fixed-release base and the Packman multimedia repository.

Similar to the NEXT Budgie edition, the GeckoLinux ROLLING Budgie also includes the same polished GeckoLinux set of configurations and pre-loaded applications along with multimedia support from the Packman repository.

However, the ROLLING edition does not provide Budgie packages from OBS repository as the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling base already offers Budgie desktop packages in its main package repository.
