Endless Computers, which builds a Linux-based operating system as well, has released a new point version Endless OS 3.8.1. The latest release comes with several improvements, changes, and bug fixes. So, let’s check out all the new features in v3.8.1.
Endless OS 3.8.1: What’s New?
Streamlined Boot Process
The installer is the first element that you require before installing and using Endless OS. Also, Endless OS is one of those Linux distros that offer an installer app to create an Endless OS bootable Live USB stick on Windows. The latest OS v3.8.1 updates the installer to its new version that makes the dual boot process smooth and makes the user experience better.
Subsequently, the updated installer now supports persistent storage. This means that if your Live USB stick contains any data or installed application, it will remain available across subsequent boots through the Live USB stick.
Even if you use the same stick to install Endless OS on your computer, it begins a fresh installation without transferring or touching your data and application.
Coming to the alternate solution of dual boot, if you want to create a virtual machine of Endless OS, v3.8.1 now provides you VMWare Guest Tools. The tool contains a suite of utilities that aim to enhance and optimize the performance of a guest Endless OS in a virtual machine.
Application Improvements
Endless OS 3.8.1 also updates and adds improvements to its main set of applications like updated Chromium 81.0.4044.138 that brings new security fixes to Endless’ built-in web browser.
Furthermore, if you use the parental control app introduced in the previous OS v3.8.0, you may have faced language translation issues during the initial setup. Hence, the latest Endless OS v3.8.1 now displays text in your selected system language rather than default English.
Additionally, the App Center also installs missing language translations for the applications if you change your system language.

Currently, the ISO image of the latest Endless OS 3.8.1 is not yet available. So, if you want a fresh installation using an ISO image, you have to wait for the next few days. Until then, you can bookmark the official download page here to check availability later.
If you’re an existing user of Endless OS and want to try the latest release, you can upgrade your system to a beta version. To do so, run the following command:
eos-updater-ctl update reboot pkexec eos-stage-ostree demo
Once the stable version comes out, you can also switch to the stable branch later by running a single command:
pkexec eos-stage-ostree prod
