Tesla is one of the most awaited electric car manufacturers in India. The manufacturer recently registered its first office and R&D center in Bangalore, which got people excited about the manufacturer’s arrival. A camouflaged Tesla Model 3 was also spotted in Pune recently.
If you’re aboard the hype train with thousands of enthusiasts, you might want to get off as it doesn’t look like Tesla’s going to launch its first car in India anytime soon. Elon Musk recently replied to the Tweet of an Indian YouTuber, Madan Gowri. Madan mentioned Elon in the tweet, asking him to launch Tesla cars in India ASAP, to which Elon replied.

It looks like the high import duties are the problem. Apart from that, he also mentions the state of green vehicles in India, which is not consistent with the country’s climate goals. However, he’s hopeful that there will be a temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles.
A user then asked if “Locally assembled vehicles will be a start in the country,” to which he replied, “If Tesla succeeds with imported vehicles, then a factory in India is quite likely.”
