On Thursday, Elon Musk announced that Tesla’s all patents have been made public and can be used by anyone in good faith. His gesture is aimed at protecting the earth from climate change which is severely affecting many parts of the world.
In an official blog post, Musk said that the electric car maker company will not initiate a lawsuit against those who’d use the patented technology for a good cause.

Surprisingly, Musk’s announcement came on the very day when a Chinese national was arrested for stealing a major patent for Project Titan — Apple’s ambitious project involving self-driving cars.
Talking about patents in the post, Musk said that keeping patents a secret was a good practice once, but not anymore. According to him, it stifles progress and empowers those in the legal profession rather than helping inventors.
The post read, “Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day.”
In a world where ideas hold more value than implementation, Musk’s announcement to make Tesla’s patents public is a welcome move and should inspire other entrepreneurs as well.
Earlier in 2018, Musk also released the Linux source code for Tesla Model S/X which contained the system image on Tesla Autopilot platform and Nvidia Tegra-based infotainment system used in the electric cars.
