Echo VR is one of the best VR games and has even made it into our best free VR games list. Unfortunately, the Meta-owned Ready At Dawn studio has decided to shut down Echo VR. The studio will shut down both Echo Arena and Echo Combat.

The game was released as a standalone multiplayer VR game that became its own e-sport. It places the player in a zero-g arena where they have to use their jets, obstacles, teammates, and even foes to catapult themselves. To win the game, players would need to dunk a frisbee into the opponent’s goal.

Why & when is Echo VR shutting down?

Echo VR is very similar to Battle School from Ender’s Game and ultimate frisbee. Unfortunately, Meta is now shutting down Echo VR so that the developer can focus on its next project. The game will be closing down its servers on August 1, 2023, at 10 am PT.

At Ready At Dawn, we pride ourselves on being open and communicative with our community. To that end, we have news to share… after many discussions internally and with our partners at Meta, we have made the difficult decision to shut down Echo VR. What does this mean for Echo VR? Well… we’re not shutting it down tomorrow. Echo VR will continue running until August 1, 2023–10:00 AM Pacific, at which point servers and services will be shut down, preventing any further play. By no means was this decision made lightly. But it was made for many good reasons and chief among them is the studio coming together to focus on our next project. We can’t say anything about it yet, but we are all excited and need all hands on deck.

To make up for this, the studio is holding a Giveback Event where users can unlock a majority of in-game items after playing just one match. All premium add-ons, such as Echo Combat, the Starter Bundle, and Echo Points, will no longer be available for purchase as of January 31st, 2023.

Unfortunately, there will also be no refunds for in-app purchases, DLC, or in-game currencies. Players have until August 1, 2023, to spend these in-game currencies. The studio also remained secretive about their next project, writing, “We can’t say anything about it yet, but we are all excited and need all hands on deck.”

Echo VR is free on the Meta Quest platform and Rift headsets until August 1, 2023. Let us know if you plan on checking out the game in the comments section below.
