One of the most reliable Apple analysts Ming Chi Kuo has come up with new predictions for AirPods. In a new research note for Apple’s suppliers, Kuo says that Apple will bring an updated version of AirPods in the first quarter of 2019. The upcoming model of Apple’s wireless earphones will also feature a wireless charging case similar to othe ne available with first-generation AirPods.
Mr. Kuo has also said that Apple will debut AirPods with “all new design model” in early 2020.
Kuo’s notes read: “We attribute AirPods’ dramatic growth (14–16mn, 26–28mn, 50–55mn, 70–80mn and 100–110mn units in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively) to 1) the upgraded model with wireless charging support to benefit shipments to launch in 1Q19, 2) the all-new design model to boost replacement demand to launch in 1Q20, 3) an innovative user experience, and 4) high integration with iOS and Mac products.”
According to Kuo, with 1 billion iPhone users all over the world, only 5 percent of them own AirPods. This suggests that there is “great growth potential” for Apple’s wireless earphones.
Earlier, Kuo predicted that Apple would launch AirPods 2 in the second half of 2018 but the engineering challenges faced in developing wireless charging pad, that was announced last year, have delayed the launch of AirPods 2.
