According to a report from The Information, Apple could roll out a new iPad Pro Smart Keyboard this year with a built-in trackpad. With this move, Apple’s tablet can get one step closer to become an alternative to traditional laptops.
Apple plans to release the iPad accessory later this year and is currently “preparing the keyboard for mass production.” Several rumors suggested that an iPad Pro update is expected to arrive in the spring of 2020. But as per the recent report, the accessory will be released alongside an update later in 2020.
The Information claims that Apple has been developing an iPad keyboard with a trackpad for several years. There were reportedly other designs that include models with capacitive keys that can “mimic the response of mechanical keys but with sensors.”
The report also states the keyboard will be made of the same materials as the existing Smart Keyboard Folio for the iPad Pro. There is no information about the keyboard and trackpad layout on the case. In most likelihood, it would be made similar to MacBook Air layout with a keyboard above the trackpad on the device.
Although Apple would have to formalize cursor input device access. Currently, mouse and trackpad compatibility is turned on in the Accessibility menu, and pointing precision isn’t much larger than what a finger would provide.
Meanwhile, there have also been other speculations for the release of iPad Pro equipped with a Mini LED display, later in 2020.
