Hirsute Hippo To Succeed Groovy Gorilla
As per the traditional Ubuntu development codename scheme which takes the form “Adjective Animal,” it’s time for “HH” series with “Hirsute Hippo” to succeed over the “GG” series with “Groovy Gorilla.”
Interestingly, Ubuntu 21.04 is the third version to have a codename with the letter “H.” Earlier, Ubuntu 5.04 “Hoary Hedgehog” was the first in 2005, followed by Ubuntu 8.04 LTS “Hardy Heron” in 2008.
Want to know the meaning of “hirsute”? Well, according to Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, hirsute means having a lot of hair on the face or body, in short, “hairy.” And “hippo” is just another short term for hippopotamus, a large thick-skinned semiaquatic African mammal, with massive jaws and large tusks.
The development of the Hirsute Hippo, which will now continue for up to 26 weeks, has started with the addition of Python 3.9 as a supported Python3 version. If you want to know other major changes planned for this cycle, check out the Ubuntu 21.04 release schedule.
Ubuntu 21.04 Will Release On April 22, 2021
As per the release schedule, the Beta version of Hirsute Hippo will arrive on April 01, 2021, and after reaching the final freeze milestone on April 15, the final stable version will hit the streets on April 22, 2021.
This also means Ubuntu 21.04 will most likely feature the next version of GNOME desktop environment, which will be GNOME 40 arriving a month before in March 2021.
Lastly, as usual, the daily builds of Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute Hippo will surely be available to download in a few days here.
