The Athlon 3000G is the most affordable AMD processor in the market right now, coming in at just $49. It is a dual-core CPU with four threads and has a 35-watt TDP and 3.5 GHz base clock.
On paper, the AMD Athlon 3000G might seem like a basic, power-efficient processor. However, what many people don’t know yet is that it offers quite capable graphical performance as well. The most affordable AMD processor has three graphics compute units, which can play several AAA videogames quite effectively.
YouTube channel RandomGamingHD recently tested the AMD Athlon 3000G on several AAA games, including the Red Dead Redemption 2, Battlefield V, Dirt Rally 2, and PUBG. He showed us how the most affordable AMD APU performed before and after the overclocking.
AMD Athlon 3000G Processor Punches Above Its Weight
The AMD Athlon APU is equipped with a Vega3 iGPU. The rest of the specs of the computer include the Gigabyte B450M motherboard and 16GB HyperX DDR4 RAM. The tester overclocked the GFX clock frequency to 1650 MHz and increased the GPU Voltage to 1.220v.
The result of this overclock was a noticeable improvement in the Frames Per Second in the following games:
|Title||Avg FPS Before Overclocking||Average FPS After Overclocking|
|Red Dead Redemption 2||19||27|
|Dirt Rally 2||31||43|
It can be clearly seen that overclocking the AMD APU has resulted in some significant performance upgrades. The most noticeable improvement is in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, in which case the game went from an unplayable 19 FPS to a decent enough 27 FPS.
However, the resolution also dropped down to 720p, in order to achieve the sub 30 FPS mark in RDR 2. In other AAA games, including the Battlefield V, Dirt Rally 2, and PUBG, the over-clocked AMD Athlon APU delivered punchy performance.
Do keep in mind that graphics settings were set to low to extract the maximum performance out of this budget APU.
The budget AMD processor also performed quite well running the Obsidian Studios’ new critically acclaimed game, the Outerworlds. The game averaged around 32 FPS in low settings on 720p resolution.
Is This Affordable AMD Processor Worth Buying?
If you’re really tight on a budget, then buying the AMD Athlon 3000G is the best decision. It can provide you with decent performance in everyday tasks, including gaming. However, if you can stretch your budget just a little bit more, then I’d suggest going for Ryzen 3 3200G.
The new AMD Ryzen 3200G is based on the Zen2 architecture instead of the Zen+ architecture on the found in the AMD Athlon APU because it offers more Instructions Per Clock Cycle.
